Singer, musician, composer, lyricist
Helle Hansen has been named ”a fabulous singer/songwriter” and ”one of Denmark’s most remarkable women in music”.
Originally starting out at the piano, then completing a 6-year education as a classical recorder player at the Royal Academy of Music, Helle Hansen has since then contributed to her own 9 solo albums – 68 altogether, from duo to bigband – as a singer, musician, composer and lyricist, as well as a vocal and instrumental arranger and producer.
One of Hansens’s trademarks has always been versatility: Her music contains references to jazz, soul, latin, pop and classical music, as well as the American singer/songwriter tradition, and is largely unconcerned with genre and trend.
In the last few years, Helle Hansen has taken up writing music and lyrics for musical theatre:
Shoes With Wings, a dance theatre performance, in Hildesheim, Hannover a.o., Germany 2008,
and STEAM, a Danish-American soulmusical showcased in Denmark and at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland 2008, and with 2 readings at Penn State NU Musical Theatre Festival 2010.
Hansen has also translated bebop musical Beatsville by Wendy Wilf & Glenn Slater,
world premiering in Denmark 2010, and Tony award-winning musical comedy Avenue Q
which opened in Denmark in October 2011, both shows playing at Fredericia Theatre, and The Story of My Life in 2012.
In November 2009, Helle Hansen represented Denmark as a soloist and songwriter, at a
huge cultural exchange event in China, at the Music Conservatory of Guangzhou and at
Sun Yat-sen’s Memorial Hall, performing live in front of delegates from 36 nations,
as well as millions of Chinese TV-viewers.
Recent years include composer/soloist collaborations with Tiptoe Bigband and Erling Kroner’s New Music Orchstra, as well as an ongoing collaboration with Randers Chamber Orchestra, as a featured soloist/composer/arranger in the crossover-project “Songs of Death, Love & Other Mayhem”.
In 2011, Helle Hansen not only won 1st place in International Songwriting Competition’s Lyrics Only-category, but her 9th solo album Uncommon Ground also won her the title
Danish Jazz Composer of the Year at Danish Music Awards 2011 (similar to a
Danish Grammy). And apparently made songwriting history, as she can now celebrate her
12th anniversary – which is a world record – as an Honorable Mention Award-winner in the USA Songwriting Competition.
Recent projects for Hansen include original songs for Danish Academy of Musical Theatre’s 2 matinée performances in 2010 and 2012, contributing songs for a New Composers Cabaret at UCMO, crossover project Mix2Talents (2010, 2011, 2012), vocal coach for Chess at Aarhus Theatre, a crossover project for young musicians in Copenhagen, a comission work (45 minutes of music) for 4-500 music school kids for Allerød Music School’s 50th Anniversary.
Upcoming projects include contributing songs to In Halcyon Days at Penn State NU Musical Theatre Festival, and to Boreas Vocal Theatre’s Songs of the Cold Seas. 2013 will also see a follow-up on Hansen’s composer/soloist collaboration “Songs of Death, Love & Other Mayhem” with Randers Chamber Orchestra – 13.03.13.
